I’ve always had a passion for smoked salmon, but nothing compares to a smoked salmon breakfast. When I moved to New York in 2001, a friend introduced me to the irresistible combination of lox and bagels, and I was instantly hooked. The creaminess of the cream cheese, paired with the delicate salmon and briny capers, was one of the best things I’d ever had. Recently, I discovered a local café offering salmon breakfast toast, which brought me right back to my New York days. Inspired by this nostalgic moment, I decided to create a healthier version of this beloved dish to share.

WHY LOVE BREAKFAST SMOKED SALMON TOAST

Breakfast smoked salmon toast is a beloved choice for several reasons:

  • Flavor Harmony: The rich, smoky flavor of the salmon pairs beautifully with the creamy texture of the spread and the crunchy toast.
  • Nutritional Benefits: Smoked salmon is packed with protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for heart health. When combined with whole-grain or multigrain toast, it makes for a nutritious start to the day.
  • Convenience: It’s a quick and easy breakfast option. Preparing it usually involves just toasting bread, spreading a layer of cream cheese, and adding slices of smoked salmon.
  • Versatility: You can customize it with various toppings like capers, red onions, avocado, or fresh herbs, allowing for a range of flavors and presentations.
  • Satiating: It’s a filling option that can keep you satisfied through the morning, thanks to the combination of protein, healthy fats, and fiber.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR EASY SMOKED SALMON TOAST

The ingredients are insanely simple for this smoked salmon breakfast toast.

  • Smoked Salmon: You can find it in most grocery stores in the seafood section. Since it’s pre-cooked, it’s ready to enjoy straight from the package.
  • Whole grain bread: I used my local grocery store artisan steakhouse bread as it’s a thicker sliced bread that can stand up to lots of toppings
  • Cream Cheese: Using a low fat cream cheese helps cut the calories and fat without compromising on taste
  • Capers: Adds a nice briny note to the toast
  • Red onion: I prefer pickled red onions, however if you prefer them raw that works well too
  • Sesame seeds: the nuttiness of black sesame seeds pairs well with the smokiness of the salmon
  • Fresh dill: this is optional but I like to use a bit of dill for some added brightness and slightly tangy flavor

HOW TO MAKE SMOKED SALMON TOAST

Full recipe details including amounts are located in the recipe card below.

If you are making pickled red onions, make those first preferably the day before.

First, toast the bread slices until they are golden brown and crispy. You can use a toaster, toaster oven, or even a grill.  I prefer a darker toast so the bread is nice and crusty.

Next, place the toast on a cutting board and spread approximately .5 oz of cream cheese on each piece of toast. Add the cold smoked salmon on top of the cream cheese spread.

MAKE IT YOUR OWN

Here are a few ways you can make this simple breakfast toast your own:

Bread: you can mix things up by using rye bread, fresh bagels, or toasted english muffins
Cheese: to amp up the protein swap out the cream cheese for plain cottage cheese or you can also substitute creme fraiche
Avocado: if cream cheese or cottage cheese isn’t your thing, making this with a creamy avocado spread would be equally delicious
Fresh chives: add some fresh chives or green onions for some added earthy flavor
Eggs: eggs would make a delicious addition add scrambled eggs, jammy eggs, egg whites or a perfectly poached egg atop the salmon
Citrus: bring a bright citrus to round out the flavors by adding a fresh squeeze of lemon juice or lemon zest

STORING LEFTOVERS

I recommend consuming the breakfast smoked salmon toast on the day it’s made, as storing leftovers can cause the bread to become soggy due to excess moisture in the fridge. For the best taste and texture, it’s best enjoyed fresh.

I made this using fresh red onion instead of pickled and no dill (because I was out of it). So good and so satisfying!
