I love simple smoothies especially on busy mornings or after long runs . It’s such an easy way to to have a healthy breakfast or snack on the go. This one is just a bit extra special because I use one of my favorite fruits, dragon fruit. After you try it, I believe this will easily become one of your favorite smoothies!
WHY 3 INGREDIENT SMOOTHIE
I love to make simple smoothie recipes to cut down on prep time in the kitchen. With only 3 ingredients, it can’t get any easier than this. What I love about this method is that you can truly mix and match the fruits that you want to include in your smoothie. For this recipe I chose dragonfruit and raspberries but there is a wide variety of combinations you can choose in order to make your own healthy smoothie. Simply choose your 2 favorite fruits (or fruit and veggie combo) and combine with almond milk and ice and tada, healthy breakfast or snack on the go.
WHAT SMOOTHIE INGREDIENTS ARE NEEDED
Ingredients for this smoothie is pretty simple given it’s just 3 ingredients. That said, know that you can mix and match whatever suits your personal tastebuds in order to make your own delicious smoothie.
I personally chose my two favorite fruits to make this recipe however I will provide a few alternatives you can try as well. Please note that I do use ice in this recipe but it’s not counted as an ingredient because well…it’s ice!
For this recipe you will need:
- Dragonfruit
- Raspberry
- Almond Milk
- Handful of Ice
The reason I chose dragonfruit is because it’s naturally fat free and high in fiber. In one 6 oz. serving you get 5 grams of fiber. When ripe, dragon fruit has a slightly sweet flavor similar to a blend of pear and kiwi. The second fruit is raspberries which provide potassium and has been proven to lower blood pressure. Raspberries have a sweet natural profile that can be slightly acidic or tart. These two together make the perfect blend of a sweet-tart smoothie.
If Dragonfruit isn’t your thing here are a few other fruits and combinations you can try
- Strawberry Banana smoothie
- Strawberry Blueberry
- Strawberry Spinach smoothie
- Banana Peanut butter smoothie
Alternatively some different options other than almond milk as the base could be:
- Soy milk
- Hemp milk
- Coconut water
- Coconut milk
HOW TO MAKE 3 INGREDIENT SMOOTHIE
First thing, take out your food processor or blender and put the ice at the bottom.
Next, add the dragonfruit and the Raspberry. Lastly add the almond milk. Blend all ingredients together until the fruit is completely incorporated with the non-dairy milk and ice. This recipe makes a thicker smoothie however if you want a thinner smoothie slowly add additional milk one ounce at a time.
Serve immediately and enjoy!
CAN I ADD PROTEIN POWDER
Absolutely! Adding some extra protein is always a win in my book. You can easily add a protein powder that blends in and doesn’t take away from the flavor of the fruits. Generally I always use vanilla protein powder or white chocolate protein powder. When looking for protein powders, I personally like to use one that has about 20 – 25 grams of protein per serving.
OTHER HEALTHY ADD-INS
There are quite a few other healthy add-ins that you can add to this base recipe that will be filled with nutritional benefits.
- Chia seeds – chia seeds are an excellent source of fiber which can improve heart health
- Hemp seeds – contain high levels of antioxidants, fatty acids and extra vitamins
- Flax seeds – can help improve digestive health and relieve constipation
- Greek yogurt – Filled with protein and healthy probiotics
CAN I MAKE A SMOOTHIE BOWL INSTEAD
Sure you can with a few small tweaks. To easily turn this into a smoothie bowl I would add 1 small ripe banana to help the mixture be creamier. With a creamy smoothie consistency this will best way to enjoy it with a spoon. I’d also top the smoothie bowl with any leftover fruit along with some cacao nibs, shredded coconut and chia seeds.
