Air Fried French Toast (sticks)

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Air Fried French toast sticks are super easy to make and great for busy mornings. I love these french toast sticks even more because they are the perfect bite size for anyone especially those little hands. And if you have little helping hands around, they can join in the fun in making these for their breakfast or snack time. If you love easy breakfast ideas as much as I do, try these french toast muffins or this overnight pumpkin french toast casserole.

ORIGINS OF FRENCH TOAST

Pretty much everyone is familiar with french toast. That eggy bread goodness that is pan fried and served on a platter covered in syrup. It is said that this dish originated in Europe by impoverished European cooks. Ensuring they used every bit of food they had, they would moisten day-old bread in both milk and eggs and then fry it until toasted. And thus, French toast was born.

Now french toast has become wildly popular and you can find it on any menu served for breakfast or brunch. There are even many different variations of french toast from french toast muffins, brioche french toast and french toast sticks. However you choose to enjoy, it is sure to be good with every bite.

WHY FRENCH TOAST STICKS IN AIR FRYER

Well why not? However, the reason I wanted to make these in the air fryer is to show the versatility of this handy appliance. It’s also much quicker and easier than whipping out a frying pan, and waiting for it to heat up.

Making these in the air fryer oven cooks them to the perfect crispiness all around and still leaves them slightly soft in the middle.

WHAT DO AIR FRIED FRENCH TOAST STICKS TASTE LIKE

Much like classic french toast, these french toast sticks are filled with cinnamon and vanilla with just a hint of nutmeg. It’s the perfect combination of sweet with a hint of spice that makes these so delicious. Also, these have a slightly deeper vanilla taste as we use a vanilla almond milk creamer that gives them a denser texture than regular almond milk.

DO I NEED AN AIR FRYER TO MAKE THESE

An air fryer is not required to make these french toast sticks, so if you don’t have one, don’t sweat it. You can still use your trusty non-stick skillet to get the job done. Just heat a skillet to medium low heat and pan fry the sticks on both sides until crispy and the egg and creamer mixture is cooked through.

WHAT TYPE OF BREAD WORKS BEST

There are a few different kind of bread that will work for french toast. Whichever bread you choose, make sure it can hold up to soaking up the egg and milk mixture. Common breads used for french toast are: brioche bread, sourdough, challah, french bread or whole wheat bread to name a few.

For this recipe I chose to use white bread. However, it’s not just any plain ol’ white bread, I used Dave’s killer bread, white done right. It’s just a little bit healthier than the average white bread which I can appreciate.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR AIR FRIED FRENCH TOAST

Air fried french toast sticks are made very similar to french toast. For this recipe I used:

  • Dave’s Killer bread White done right
  • Eggs
  • Vanilla almond milk creamer
  • Vanilla extract
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg

You most likely have all of these ingredients in the house.

The almond milk creamer can easily be swapped out for your favorite milk or dairy-free milk of choice such as:

  • soy milk
  • coconut milk
  • hemp milk
  • whole milk
  • oat milk
  • heavy cream

HOW TO MAKE FRENCH TOAST STICKS IN AIR FRYER

First, in a large shallow bowl, whisk 2 eggs until blended. Next add your almond milk creamer, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla and whisk again until throughly combined.

On a cutting board, cut your bread of choice into even sticks and set aside. Now, take a few of your french toast sticks and dip in the egg and spice mixture. Be sure throughly coat on both sides. Repeat this process until all of the french toast sticks are coated in the mixture.

Next place the french toast sticks in the air fryer basket in a single layer and cook on 375 degrees for a cook time of 7 – 8 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and crispy around the edges.

Once the air fried french toast sticks are finished, remove from the tray and serve as you like!

WHAT TO SERVE WITH FRENCH TOAST STICKS IN AIR FRYER

There is tons of variety in what you can choose to serve with these french toast sticks in the air fryer. You can choose to serve alongside your favorite fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, turkey bacon or even pork bacon. There is also either pork, turkey or chicken breakfast sausage as well.

There are also a variety of toppings you can use such as:

  • maple syrup
  • agave
  • honey
  • cinnamon sugar
  • brown sugar

The best part is no matter how you top them, they are sure to be amazing french toast that tastes like an indulgent breakfast!
