WHY LOVE CRISPY AIR FRYER PHILLY CHEESESTEAK EGG ROLLS
- Flavor Fusion: The combination of thinly sliced beef, melted cheese, sautéed onions, and peppers creates a delicious and savory flavor profile. The blend of these ingredients captures the essence of a classic Philly Cheesesteak.
- Texture Contrast: The crispy exterior of the egg roll wrapper provides a satisfying crunch, contrasting with the tender and flavorful filling. This dual texture experience enhances the overall enjoyment of the dish.
- Portable and Shareable: Egg rolls are a convenient and portable snack or appetizer. Their bite-sized nature makes them easy to share at parties, gatherings, or as finger food during casual events.
- Versatility: While traditional Philly Cheesesteaks are served in a roll, adapting the concept to an egg roll form allows for creative variations. People can experiment with different cheeses, seasonings, and additional ingredients to put their unique spin on this classic dish.
- Appetizer or Main Course: Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls work well as both appetizers and main courses, offering flexibility in serving options. They can be a crowd-pleasing party snack or a satisfying meal, depending on the occasion.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR EGG ROLLS
Ingredients for these crispy Philly cheesesteak egg rolls you can find in your local grocery store.
- Flank steak – to keep this recipe on the healthier side I swap the traditional rib eye steak for flank steak which has a lower fat content but still packs a flavorful punch
- Onions – I used yellow onion in this recipe but you can swap for your favorite onion variety like white onion or red onion
- Green bell pepper – mild pepper that brings a nice bite and subtle sweetness to the filling
- Poblano pepper – completely optional but I do love the addition of mild heat the poblano pepper adds
- Provolone cheese – thinly sliced provolone cheese is the traditional cheese used in this great recipe, I opted for a reduced fat provolone cheese version. However, you can use a variety of white cheeses like Mozzarella, Swiss cheese, Monterey jack cheese or gruyere cheese. You can also make a provolone cheese sauce to use instead of slices of cheese.
- Egg roll wrappers – these are the star of this recipe as you need something to wrap all of that juicy cheesesteak filling in
- Worcestershire sauce – slightly sweet and savory with an umami flavor profile
- Spice blend – blending spices together like salt, pepper, oregano, garlic powder and onion powder
- Avocado oil – perfect for cooking at high heat temperatures
HOW TO COOK PHILLY CHEESE STEAK EGG ROLLS
Pre-heat a non stick skillet to medium heat.
While the skillet is heating, thinly slice your flank steak (against the grain). Tips for cutting steak are listed below.
Place in a bowl and season with your spices including Worcestershire sauce. Set aside.
Next, thinly slice your vegetables and set aside. Bring a non-stick skillet up to medium-high heat and add avocado oil. Add your vegetables to the pan and sauté until soft. This will take about 3-4 minutes.
Remove the sautéed peppers and set aside and bring heat up on the skillet slightly. Add a bit of oil if needed and add steak to brown on both sides.
Once steak is cooked through, add the peppers back to the pan and stir to combine.
HOW TO WRAP EGGROLLS
On a large cutting board, baking sheet or piece of parchment paper, lay the egg roll wrapper down
Place half a slice of provolone cheese on the center of the egg roll wrapper
On top of the cheese, put a large heaping scoop of the meat mixture
Fold the wrapper in half to form a triangle
Finish rolling the remainder of the egg roll and use a little water on the bottom corner of the wrapper in order to seal tightly
Repeat process until all the egg rolls are wrapped
COOKING PROCESS
Place all fo the Philly cheesesteak egg rolls in a single layer on the air fryer basket wire rack seam side down.
Spray the tops with a bit of cooking spray so that they can get golden brown.
Cook in the air fryer for 7 – 10 minutes on 375 degrees or until the egg rolls have a crispy wrapper.
Remove from air fryer and allow to cool.
TIPS FOR CUTTING STEAK
Partially Freeze the Steak:
- Place the steak in the freezer until it is partially frozen but not completely solid. This makes it easier to achieve clean and precise cuts.
Use a Sharp Knife:
- Ensure that your knife is very sharp. A dull knife can cause tearing and uneven cuts, especially when dealing with partially frozen meat.
Slice with Care:
- When slicing partially frozen steak, use a smooth, controlled motion. This can help you achieve even and consistent cuts.
Slice Against the Grain:
- Identify the direction of the muscle fibers (the grain) in the steak. Slice against the grain to shorten the muscle fibers, resulting in a more tender bite. This is especially important for tougher cuts of meat.
Yes, you can prepare the filling ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator. However, it’s recommended to assemble and fry the egg rolls just before serving to maintain their crispiness.
While traditional egg rolls are fried, you can bake them as an alternative. Brush the egg rolls with oil and bake in a preheated oven until golden brown.
Common dipping sauces include marinara, Sriracha mayo, or a cheese sauce. The choice depends on personal preferences.
Yes, you can freeze unbaked Philly cheesesteak egg rolls. Place them on a baking sheet in a single layer, freeze until solid, then transfer to a freezer bag. Fry or bake them directly from frozen when ready to serve.
To reheat, it’s best to use an oven or toaster oven to help maintain their crispiness. Avoid microwaving, as it can make the egg rolls soggy.
