CHEESY TURKEY TACO SKILLET BAKE INGREDIENTS & SUBSTITUTIONS
Ingredients for this dish are incredibly simple and you will most likely have most of these items on hand. If not, a quick trip to the grocery store is all that’s needed. Pick up the following ingredients to make this tasty dish.
- Lean ground turkey – I like to use ground turkey that is 93/7 however 85/15 works well too. You can also use ground chicken, or ground beef for this tasty recipe.
- Black beans – I like to use black beans for this dish however another good substitute would be pinto beans or red kidney beans.
- Mexican Cheese – I used low fat 2% shredded Mexican cheese blend. However any shredded cheese will do like Colby Jack, Queso fresca.
- Mixed peppers – Can be found in the frozen section and it is a mix of yellow onion, red bell pepper, green bell pepper and yellow bell pepper. This is a great shortcut to get this meal done quickly however you can also use a blend of fresh peppers as well.
- Herdez salsa Ranchero – I prefer the mild version however if you like it spicier, it also comes in a hot version.
You’ll also use some staple pantry Mexican spices to make this meal complete like cumin, salt and black pepper. Alternatively, you can choose to season with a homemade taco seasoning like this homemade chicken taco seasoning.
HOW TO MAKE SKILLET TACO BAKE
Full recipe details are located in the recipe card below including amounts.
In a large skillet heat to medium heat. Spray with cooking spray and brown ground turkey until it is cooked through and there is no pink left. While cooking, season the ground turkey with cumin, black pepper, and salt. Once the meat is browned, drain off any excess fat and set aside.
In the same pan, spray with more cooking spray and add the mixed peppers and cook to until softened. While the peppers are cooking, open and drain the can of black beans. Add ground turkey back to the skillet along with the black beans. Stir to combine.
Add the salsa ranchero and jalapeños and let come to a bubble. Once the taco meat comes to a bubble, reduce heat to low and allow to simmer for another 5-7 minutes.
Top the cheesy turkey taco skillet with shredded cheese. Transfer to the oven to broil to melt the cheese for approximately 1-2 minutes or until the cheese has melted and is bubbly. Lastly, top with traditional garnishes like cilantro, green onions, sliced fresh avocado, and sour cream.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS FOR TURKEY TACO SKILLET
The beauty in this dish is truly that limitless ways in which you can serve this dish.
Tortilla Chips – You can serve alongside your favorite tortilla chips and serve this taco skillet bake like a dip or use it as a topping for ground turkey nachos.

Rice – Lastly, serve it alongside some cilantro lime jasmine rice for a nice healthy meal.
BEST TYPE OF SKILLET TO USE FOR THIS RECIPE
I personally love to use a large and deep non-stick skillet like this Calphalon HexClad non-stick pan. It’s one of their larger pans and it’s safe for all cooking types including transfering to the oven.
LeCreuset everyday pan would also work extremely well for this recipe as it is large enough to cook all of the ingredients and transfer to the oven as well.
If you don’t have an oven safe pan you can transfer the meat mixture from the skillet to a 9×9 baking dish. Top with the cheese and broil until the cheese is brown and bubbly.
STORAGE AND REHEATING
Store the leftover of this turkey taco skillet in an airtight container. Allow the meat mixture to come to room temperature and transfer to a storage container. Place in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Reheating the taco meat filling is simple. Portion out the serving and place in a microwave safe bowl and cover with a paper towel or microwave safe cover. Reheat for 1.5 minutes on medium heat or until the ground turkey mixture is completely warmed through.
