What to Serve with Chicken and Waffles

What to serve with chicken and waffles at your next brunch gathering? Well look no further as I’ve rounded up a list of 7 great side dishes that you can serve along with this classic Sunday brunch dish. These delicious sides will make this main dish become a complete meal and provide tons of added flavor and texture to your brunch spread. 

Before I delve into these delicious recipes that are the perfect match for those fluffy waffles and crispy chicken, I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t at least share how you can make this classic dish a bit healthier.

In my recipe post, How to make low carb chicken and waffles, I share a few tricks on how to shave some calories and fat from this meal. Generally when you go to any favorite brunch spot and order this dish, it can come in at a whopping 1100 calories! The macro breakdown looks something like: 97g carbs, 65g fat, 36g protein. Talk about not being too friendly to your waistline. I still enjoy eating all the yummy foods, I just don’t want it to the be the ONLY meal I have in a day. Knowing that this dish clocks in at 25g carbs, 16g fat, 36g protein and approx. 320 calories you see why I’ll opt for this low carb version any day.

HOW TO MAKE CHICKEN AND WAFFLES HEALTHIER

My low carb waffles start with Kodiak Cakes Carb Conscious Buttermilk Flapjacks simply add the ingredients listed on the package, mix well and pour the batter into your waffle maker and remove once golden brown. Of course if you wanted to spice up the waffles to suit your taste buds you can do that as well. Below I offer a few alternatives for mix-ins:

Savory Waffles – Savory waffles are a delightful twist on the traditional sweet waffle recipe. Instead of the usual sweet ingredients like sugar and syrup, savory waffles incorporate savory flavors and ingredients to create a savory and satisfying dish

  • Cheddar cheese + green onions
  • Spinach + ham + cheese

Sweet Waffles – Sweet waffles are a classic and beloved breakfast or brunch dish that is versatile and offers a perfect combination of sweetness, texture, and endless possibilities for customization.

  • Brown Sugar + pecan
  • Strawberry + chocolate chip

Just know that whatever additional ingredients you add will change the nutritional content of the base mix. 

Next the chicken that is a household favorite are my air fried crispy chicken tenders. They make the perfect addition to the waffles recipe. By using the air fryer it’s a great way to cut some additional calories and fat. However although these are air fried they are still cooked to a crispy perfection filled with tons of crunch.

ROUND UP OF BEST SIDE DISHES

Now that we’ve covered that, let me offer you some mouthwatering suggestions for the perfect side dishes to complement your meal. Please keep in mind that since I hail from the south, these sides are predominantly scrumptious comfort food options and may not be the most figure-friendly choices.

I feel like mac n cheese is a great place to start as a perfect complement to an already sweet and savory dish. This one from Carita over at Seasoned to taste blog is so scrumptious, it will truly leave you wanting more. “One thing about macaroni and cheese, it’s the gift that keeps on giving! I’ve yet to meet anyone that doesn’t love mac and cheese, do they exist? What I love most about macaroni and cheese is it’s versatility. There’s several ways to prepare it and the add-ons are endless. Personally, I love lobster mac and cheese and you can never go wrong with adding smokey gouda or bacon, should I keep going?” 

The best part about her mac n cheese is that there’s no baking or boiling and the prep is very minimal. Just throw everything in the pot, give it a stir and in less than one hour, you have creamy, cheesy tasty macaroni and cheese!

Creamy Grits

Nothing says American south than a good bowl of grits. They are so creamy and delicious that it would make the perfect compliment to the fried chicken pieces. I’m trying to remember to build her up and instill a strong sense of self because we won’t always be with her helping her navigate this thing called life.
