I love making homemade pizza for my family because it’s one of those special treats we can all enjoy for a family game night or movie night. However sometimes I like to switch things up from my traditional pepperoni and instead make one with a bit more pizzazz. Thus the BBQ chicken pizza was born. Filled with lots of tangy bbq sauce, loaded with protein and veggies, it’s all the flavor without the guilt.
WAYS TO MAKE BBQ CHICKEN PIZZA HEALTHY
There are a few swaps that I made for this pizza in order to make it healthier than your local pizza shop.
- Choose a Whole Wheat Flour Crust: Start your healthy BBQ chicken pizza by opting for a whole wheat crust. Whole wheat is rich in fiber and nutrients, making it a healthier alternative to traditional refined flour crusts. The added fiber helps regulate digestion, keeps you feeling fuller for longer, and promotes a healthy gut.
- Grill the Chicken: Instead of using fatty processed meats, grill lean chicken breast for your pizza. Marinate it with a tangy barbecue sauce to infuse it with that delicious smoky flavor. Grilling the chicken not only reduces its fat content but also enhances its taste, adding a mouthwatering charred element to your pizza.
- Load Up on Colorful Veggies: Pile your pizza with a rainbow of vibrant and nutritious vegetables. Opt for a mix of bell peppers, red onion, cherry tomatoes, and corn kernels. These veggies not only provide essential vitamins and minerals but also add a delightful crunch and a burst of freshness to your pizza.
- Go Easy on the Cheese: While cheese adds a creamy and indulgent element to pizza, it’s important to use it sparingly to keep your BBQ chicken pizza healthy. Opt for a low-fat or reduced-fat mozzarella cheese and use a moderate amount to maintain the balance between flavor and health. Sprinkle the cheese evenly over the pizza, allowing it to melt and bind all the ingredients together.
- Add Fresh Herbs: Herbs can elevate the taste of any dish, and your BBQ chicken pizza is no exception. After baking to a golden brown, garnish your pizza with fresh cilantro, basil leaves or parsley. These herbs not only add a pop of color but also bring a burst of freshness and a delightful aroma to each bite.
- Serve with a Side Salad: Complete your healthy pizza experience by serving it with a side salad. A crisp and refreshing salad with mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumber slices, and a light vinaigrette dressing will complement the flavors of your pizza perfectly. This combination adds extra fiber, nutrients, and hydration to your meal.

HOW TO MAKE HEALTHY BBQ PIZZA CHICKEN PIZZA RECIPE
Let’s dive into the details and learn how to create this guilt-free delight!
First, gather all of your ingredients including your spices and set aside. Pre-heat your oven to 425 degrees.
Next, prep all of your pizza toppings by shredding the chicken, slicing the red onions, and chopping the spinach. On a large baking sheet or pizza stone if using homemade pizza dough, roll dough out on parchment paper and spray the dough with some cooking spray. I prefer avocado oil as it’s great for cooking at higher temperatures.
Now you’re ready to assemble your pizza. First layer about a cup barbecue sauce on top of the dough. Note that this amount of sauce will vary based on the size of your pizza dough. Next add the shredded chicken, then the sliced onions and lastly the chopped spinach. Top with the mozzarella cheese.
Place in the oven and bake per package directions, typically between 10-15 minutes. Make sure the crust is crispy and cheese is melted and bubbly on top. Remove from the oven and let cool for 2-3 minutes before slicing. You can opt to top with some fresh herbs like parsley or basil for added flavor.
