This 4 ingredient guacamole recipe is delicious and the perfect accompaniment to any Mexican style meal. It has a slight heat to it but balances out perfectly from the sweetness of the lime. This will quickly become your favorite snack or go to appetizer. If you need some dishes to pair it with, try these TexMex egg rolls, Flank steak enchilada skillet or Jerk shrimp tacos.
I’ll be honest, I was not always a fan of guacamole. In fact, I used to turn my nose up to it because I thought it was disgusting. Then one day my oldest sister made some guacamole and said, Kim, this is the best guacamole ever. I tried it and well, as they say, the rest is history. Over the years, I’ve spent time not only perfecting my guacamole recipe but experimenting as well. Aside from this easy guacamole recipe, I also love making this smokey guacamole dip as well.
PICKING THE PERFECT AVOCADO
Before we can even talk about making this simple guacamole recipe, we need to first discuss how best ways to choose avocados. Choosing a ripe avocado is actually quite simple as there are two ways you can determine if it’s ripe. The first way is by testing the flesh of the avocados. Gently press your thumb against the flesh and if it “gives” then most likely that is a ripe avocado. The second way is to simply pluck the stem off the top of the avocado and if it is bright green, then it is perfect for the picking. I talk more about it in my YouTube video.
If by chance your grocery store only has unripe avocados, do not fret, there is a handy trick you can use. Once you get the avocados home, put them in a brown bag and store them in a cool dark place for 1-2 days. This will help in the ripening process.
WAYS TO SERVE 4 INGREDIENT GUACAMOLE
There are a few ways you can serve this delicious dip. You can serve it for your next game day as the perfect appetizer along with pico de gallo, as a topper with burrito bowls, as avocado toast, or simply with your favorite tortilla chips.
No matter how you serve it or for what occasion, it’s certain to be everyone’s favorite.
WHAT INGREDIENTS ARE NEEDED
Creating this recipe was hard because pairing down guacamole to just 4 main list of ingredients is a tough one because I feel not one ingredient can be left out! However, in a pinch these basic flavors come together to make the perfect dip that you can be proud to serve. Also as a disclaimer, I chose to not count the avocado as an ingredient along with salt and pepper. I feel those are commonly used and just staples in all dishes. Now that we have that settled, here are the ingredients for this basic guacamole recipe:
- Red onion
- Red bell pepper
- Jalapeno
- Lime

HOW TO MAKE EASY FOUR-INGREDIENT GUACAMOLE RECIPE
On a cutting board, dice all of your fresh ingredients. Dice the red onion, red bell pepper and jalapeño and set aside.
In a medium bowl, add the red onions, fresh lime juice and kosher salt and let sit for 1 minute. This will help in allowing that flavor to be incorporated throughout all of the dish. While the onions are sitting in the lime juice slice your avocados length wise and remove the pit with a spoon.
Next scoop the avocados meat into the bowl and add the remaining ingredients. Sprinkle a touch of black pepper and mix together thoroughly.
You can decide if you want more of a chunky mash or a smooth creamy texture for this delicious guacamole. If you choose to have a smoother texture, then a potato masher works perfectly to get that smooth consistency.
ALTERNATIVE ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS
Like I mentioned, paring this down to just some basic ingredients was tough. If you have a bit more time and want to deepen the flavor here are a few more ingredients you can choose to add to this base recipe:
- Tomatoes – adds a bit more acidity and sweetness to the dish
- Pickled jalapeños – these are milder than their fresh counterparts and the pickled juice adds a mild heat
- Fresh Cilantro – controversial however if you love cilantro add it. If you don’t like it, then parsley is a good alternative
- Fresh Garlic – pairs really well with mildness of the red onion
Additional spices you can use are:
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Cumin
HOW TO STORE LEFTOVER GUACAMOLE
Storing leftover guacamole can be tricky. However in order to prevent browning, the best thing is to try and reduce the amount of air in the container. Scoop your guacamole into an airtight container. Place the pit of the avocado in the container as this can help slow down the browning process. Next take a piece of plastic wrap and place directly over the guacamole and secure it inside the container. Lastly place your lid on the container and store in the fridge for 1-2 days.
